Some Easy Ways to Help Animals

You don’t have to get out and demonstrate or volunteer in a shelter to help animals. You don’t have to write letters, or even give money. Many rescues and shelters need supplies such as dog and cat food, litter, beds, and your old blankets, sheets, and towels. We are working on compiling a list of needs of local rescue organizations.*

In the meantime, here are some ideas.

Don’t throw away your used printer ink cartridges and cell phones!

You can donate them to help animals. Here is an organization that can turn your used cell phones and printer ink cartridges into money for the animals:

Heaven on Earth Society for Animals  - I have visited their sanctuary and met all their wonderful feline residents, and was very impressed (with both the cats and the facilities). Heaven on Earth is doing a great job rescuing and finding homes for these kitties.

A Word of Caution:

If you plan to donate money to an organization, please do your homework. Not all organizations are what they seem to be. Some examples: HSUS and PETA both promote killing feral cats and certain breeds of dogs, and are against no-kill shelters. The World Wildlife Fund sponsors animal research. The Sierra Club is pro-hunting.

One of the best ways to find out about what various organizations are up to is to read Animal People Newspaper. They also publish The Watchdog, an annual report on the doings, both philosophically and financially, of most all animal organizations.

Stay tuned for more ways to help!

*Please contact the organization you have in mind before donating goods to make sure of what they need.
